Chapter 7

When Chase saw Honey’s pretty lips part slightly in surprise, he wanted to press his lips to hers again, like he did when they were dating. Then he realized she was stunned at what he’d just said and he’d better clear up any misunderstanding. The last thing he wanted was for any more misunderstanding between them.

“I meant you can stay in the guest cabin beside mine and I can show you around the ranch. You can take pictures for the website.”

“Why can’t I stay with you?” she asked softly.

“You want to stay with me?” he asked.

Now it was his turn to be surprised. And it took a lot to surprise Chase. He wanted more than anything to be close to Honey again. But things were different now, weren’t they? Then again, his cabin was huge. It had a guest quarter inside it, four bedrooms. One of the largest on the ranch.

“I mean, if that’s okay with you?” She grinned. “You know I won’t bite. I can pick your brain and get as much information for the website, get a real feel for what it is that you do on the ranch. It would only be for a few days. I can get this project done in no time.”

A smile touched his lips. Even though she walked out on him, there was still something there between them. He felt it and wondered if she did too.

It wasn’t something that went away, that feeling, that sweet connection. He felt it with Honey and he didn’t know what to do about it. But all he thought was heck yeah, he wanted her to stay with him. But he was afraid of falling for her again. His heart couldn’t take another heartbreak. Then what would happen? She’d find another job and walk right out of his life for good—again. And maybe send him an email or text message saying she was gone.

He couldn’t take that again. Still, it made sense for her to stay there. She should be able to see how they live there on the ranch. They had so many guest cabins and a guest lodge on the land. The Carsens wanted to expand to include deserving families who needed a break and to get a taste of fresh country air and relaxed life on the ranch.

This would help tons of families if she could pull this off. Communication and marketing were her strength. He knew that deep down.

So then what was the problem?

“Just how long would this project take?” he asked her.

She glanced down at her form. “Well now let me see.”

He loved the way her long beautiful fingers traced down the page as she read over her notes. He loved everything about her. She was always so focused, so creative. That’s why it tore him apart, confused him when she walked out of his life.

Okay, focus Cowboy.

Focus on the task at hand.

There’s no room in your life for love now. Not anymore.

Marriage for the sake of keeping the ranch, maybe.
